The rooster I know is some sort of bantam. His name is peepers, we just don't know wich. I've been told old english, japanese or dutch but I've also been told he isn't. If he isn't those then what is he??

This next one is called black head. We got her as a clutch of hatching eggs that were supposed to be barred rock (she's definitely not that.) As a chick she was solid black, feather wise and still is. She has always been on the small side so at first we thought they messed up and gave us a bantam egg of some sort.

Roo does look like a black japanese bantam to me. Not sure about the hen...do you know what other breeds the person/hatchery that gave you the eggs has?

Old English--could be
Dutch--they are supposed to have white earlobes (his are white)
Japanese--they are supposed to have extra-short legs, although not all do

So he could be any of them, if you assume "hatchery quality" to account for details like earlobe color or leg length being wrong.

He could be a mix. Not all chickens belong to a single breed.

Could easily have a Barred Rock mother, and some other rooster for a father. Maybe a bantam, to account for her being small.
(A Barred Rock hen passes black to all of her chicks, but she gives the barring only to her sons. So if the father is not barred, then the daughters are not barred either. That's how Black Sexlinks are produced, and it's what I think probably happened with your hen as well.)

Thats something to think about. You think she's a black sexlinked barred rock is a possibility? Or bantam mixed? Wich would? Be most likely? Peepers is tractor supply quality. They only get from breeders in our area.

If Peepers came from Tractor Supply, then he's probably not a mix of breeds. I think Old English Game Bantam is more likely, but he could possibly be Dutch or Japanese.

For the hen, I think probably her mother was Barred Rock, and her father might have been a bantam or small chicken of some sort. That would make her a sort-of Black Sexlink. Not exactly like the ones hatcheries produce, but same color for the same genetic reason.

Maybe. Thanks, I can research that myself. Didn't know thats how sexlinks worked.
