Last spring I bought a bunch of white plymouth rock pullets and a pair a NH Reds, with the idea of hatching some golden comets. They were in the coop with my other hens which are comets and aracuanas and a rooster that looks like a barred rock. He may be a mix though because he was given to me by the kindergarten class that hatched them from eggs that were given to them from a mixed flock.
We seperated the hens and roosters into seperate pens. The NH Red rooster, the NH red hen and 13 white rocks went into a seperate pen for breeding. After 2 1/2 weeks I started to gather their eggs. I gathered five days and ended up with 44 fertilized eggs in the incubator. 21-22 days later we have hatched out 40 chicks. There are 30 that look to me like they are probably comets. Some are mostly yellow (males?) and others are more reddish with some darker areas on their backs (females?). The question I have is what do you think the black ones are? We have 10 of them in the mix. To me they look kind of like plymouth rocks or black stars. They are black with yellow bellies and bottoms. A couple have yellow spots on their heads. Their legs have a lot of grey on them.
Also, do the yellow and red ones that I think are comets look like comets to you? Thanks for sharing your thoughts on what these babies may be.
