WHat are we?????

[Wild Chicken]

We obtained 8 free chicks that were part of a school project. They got them from the local hatchery so they can be one of the following: RIR, BO, California Grey Leghorn, Hubbard Isa Browns, Barred Rocks, Black Sex LInks, Araucanas, White Rocks, or Black Australorps. We have a few really light ones, a few darker ones, and than the black one.

We would also like to know if you chicken genius' can tell if we are a boy or girl from the pictures of the single chicks. I grabbed a different lighter one so you could see the contrast between the 2 in the pic of the 2 light ones.

Thanks in advance for your help. We are chicken novices, and I must say that they are veerrrrrrrryyyyyyyyy addictive!!!

This is one of the darker ones and we believe it is a girl???????

This is a picture just to show the contrast between the 2. It's the same dark one as above but a different lighter one.

There are 2 of them that have shorter tail feathers than the others........not sure if this matters or not

I think that the black ones are barred rocks. But then, I'm not an expert, so what do I know, LOL? What was that term you used earlier, oh yeah, 'chicken virgin', that's me alright! It'll be a long time before I can look at a chicken and tell anything about it. Except that it's cute.

Are the darker of the lighter ones RIR????? And are the lighter ones BO???? THis is our first time with chicks and we have nooooooooo clue!!!

I do not know, but I DO know that my RIR's do not look anything like those and are about the same age. They are red, and have a speckled look to them, as thats the way their juvenile feathers come in.

RIRs would be darker at that age, I think. The darker of the light ones might be a Buff Orp. I definitely think the dark one with the spot on the head is a Barred Rock. I'll find pics of ours at that age if I can.

It looks to me like you have the following:

ISA Brown - female (white with reddish feathers)
ISA Brown male or possibly a california grey leghorn (do they have grey or dark splotches somewhere on them?) If it's a leghorn I'm not entirely sure of the sex. ISA browns are red sex-links (great egg layers), so the darker chicks are female and the light, almost white chicks are males. The white ones could also be white rocks.

The black one is a barred rock and I'm almost 100% sure it's a female. They generally have great dispositions and lay brown eggs pretty reliably. Hopefully it's not a black sex-link male, they look like barred rocks.

here's our red sex link. I think that ISA Browns are sex links like this, right? If so, ours started off VERY light, and gradually got her reddish feathers..... possibly your light ones could be isa Browns???
