Yeah, butt washing is the best to do to be sure that the vent stays clear. I take a large bowl of warm water and a rag, and i just sit by the brooder and go through each and look, and wipe the bum that needs it. I also gave mine some scrabble eggs this morning, cause they say the extra protein possibly can help it. But once I wipe it off, I put some vaseline around the vent to keep the poop from sticking. You just want to try to not over stress the chick, cause they believe its stress that causes the pasty butts. It's nothing to stress about, you just gotta watch those bums and wash it if you see it.Wouldn't a daily warm water cloth bum wash and some cream over the vent keep this pasty butt thing at bay?
You guys have be worried now!
I give my two ladies epsom salt butt washes and some udderbutter cream when they get feather loss. It helps a lot.
Probably too much stress for a little one, but wouldn't vigilant butt cleanings work?
Oh no! You had some show wry neck!So sad! We lost a total of 7 in the first 24hours. 2DOA, 1 had prolapse, the other 4 just were so weak. I tried everything to perk them up, but they would get to where they would not eat or drink. Just breaks my heart thinking about them all. I thought I had one turning a corner last night, but this morning she was just as bad, tried the sugar water again, and she just slept.
I really wonder if shipping was just too hard on these ones. But my remaining are doing "ok" we have some pasty butts, but they all seemed perky and eating and drinking this morning.

I CAN"T WAIT!!!!! Funny I got two chicks last year (mind your they were 2 week olds) and basically had them in my outdoor coup with a heat lamp. They both managed fine ... mind you it was the end of spring not winter!
And I'd imagine the first week is the most fragile. Hopefully mine are full of life when I get them. I'm picking them up so no delivery. Perhaps I will bring some food and water and a bigger box to carry them home in ~ giving them a head start on some energy.
electrolytes in the water is probably a good thing too, I'd imagine?
