hmm planning on expanding a lot you only need one nest box for every 3-4 hens..which are like little kids they all want the same box anyway.I have 5 hens in one of my coops 3 nests they all lay in the same box every day...the mey change which one but all the eggs are always in one box.they stand an wait for each other to get done

I wasn't sure exactly how many boxes I'd need, but they are split into two separate groups so I can split the coop down the road if I need to. Once I get to building it, I'll be uploading pics and such. Wanted to start this weekend, but I'm now working tomorrow :-( Bah! Anyway, Maybe I'll have a few hours I can put into it tomorrow after I get home, and then do more on Sunday. No rush really as my chicks aren't due till the very end of May :-( Thanks though, maybe I'll eliminate a couple of boxes and leave more room for more chickens :)

I purchased a prefab coop from Costco for my 4 hens. Then when I decided to raise BLRW, I needed something a lot larger but needed to build in a budget. Found pallets from the local hot tub store and now have a 8'x8' coop we built in 2 days. Just missing the nest boxes and a few finishing touches. It was a family affair and the most fun we have had in a long time!

Love them family affairs :) I'll bet you had a blast! I don't know though... are you sure 8x8 will be enough? <snickering>

That's actually what I'm doing tight now... on the nice days they are in a prefabricated coop outside... to let them fly lol but I leave the door open so they can explore... they stick close to the coop

its been in the 30s at night... the last week its been cold and windy... today during the day its sunny a few breezes and id say 67:p
Well, I'm no expert by ANY stretch of the imagination, but it's my understanding that you only need 1 nesting box for 4-5 hens (??)

i have 5 laying hens right now and they have 2 nest boxes and while they will use one more then the other i do sometimes find eggs in both boxes and 1 hen prefers to lay in the pet taxi in the mud room if she has the choice so i suppose there 3 nest boxes. i suppose whe my 5 little pullets start laying i'm think of adding two more boxes

7 days in and counting until hatch day which will be approximately April 12th with 10 eggs set all Golden Comet but 1 just may be from the hen we think is a type of Maran, the egg is super jumbo, on the darker side, and barely fits in the egg turner. Hummmm we shall see
