What are your chicken goals

Pics
Reducing the free range space AND adding shade trees, what a great goal!!! What kinda trees are you planning?
I like trees with a purpose, which 99% of the time means ‘fruit’. There are so many I’d like to have & not enough space for them all. I think grape arches would be interesting & beautiful, but they are deciduous & won’t always provide shade. 🤔 There’s a lot to consider when you’re putting in something that will hopefully be permanent.

I think you have an awesome goal set. I don’t have any chicken plans, as I don’t have chickens or poultry anymore. But, I do have 2 dogs. Hoping to add a 3rd possible next year, of my dream dog breed. :)
Beautiful handsome pup, is this a Border Collie?? I’m dying for another Rat Terrier similar to Imogene, she’s so daggone smart and can be a great chicken shepherd at times though she also loves her creature comforts. R. T.s haven’t been seen on rescue listings within 200 miles though I noticed and did a bit of research on Border Collies. They are intelligent, protective and great family dogs. Thanks for any information.

I like the way you think! We have hopes of adding fruit trees this upcoming yr. Like you, do many I want not enough space. I think we can fit like 10 in the spot we have picked, but we couldn't fit any at the last place
We couldn't have chickens or pigs either so I am thankful!!

The grape arches sound super pretty!!! I planted raspberry and blueberries last yr but only the raspberries took.. I don't think the soil is right for blueberries.

We want to get our garden going this upcoming yr also!!!

The dog in my profile pic is an Aussie! :) I love Borders, though, super super smart dogs.

I love this question!
My chicken goals have also evolved as the journey unfolds. Originally, I just wanted a small flock of 10 or so to support my family's egg consumption. However, I ended up with 20 chickens from the start and have way too many eggs to handle so I have started selling them. I actually love selling my girls' eggs! People in my community adore the fresh eggs and are always wanting more! It is a lovely feeling to be able to provide local, fresh, humanely sourced eggs from my little coop. ❤️
With that being said, my next goal is to begin raising my own meat birds. This is a totally new concept for me, as it was never part of the plan... But, I have the space and I have the means so it seems like a good venture. Meat prices are going up and up so being able to raise and process my own meat will be a win. I look to start that adventure in the spring of next year. Wish me luck!

Nice!!! I think its cool that the chickemln hobby can keep growing and changing depending on a persons goals at the time.
I am excited for you!!!
Good luck on your adventure!!!

Those are really great goals!

I want to rescue unwanted, spent, deformed, or special needs chickens. And maybe cockerels/roosters. I don't think that will happen for a while.

For now, I want a pretty and functional coop. My current one is just functional. So I'm currently waiting patiently for a time when I have enough time and money to do the following:
  • Move our metal shed (houses the riding mower, chipper, log splitter, and kayaks) to behind the workshop
  • Build a new goat house where the metal shed was
  • Move the current goat house near the new goat house and turn that into a coop
  • Build a new, larger fenced and covered yards for the birds
  • Maybe get some turkeys and/or geese
That's a lot of work. And I need hubby's blessing, too. I'm hoping spring???
I love your goals. Especially the part where you mention rescuing unwanted, deformed, or special needs chickens. Thank you for that. <3

My goal is to keep my birds happy and healthy during the Winter months. I need to go any buy some new five gallon buckets with lids to keep in the house on (icy days) for when I get them fresh water. I have fifty hens, five roosters and eleven guineas. I don't sell my eggs, I give them out "free to my elders" in the community. I also barter for square hay bales in July for the Winter months. Have a nice Thanksgiving.
You are all Love and I love that.
