What are your favorite breeds of chickens?

I noticed in your pic you have silkys in with your big roo. does he leave the silky alone? I had my little silky in my mixed flock and had to seoarate them because he kept getting on my silkys, I was afraid he may injure them. Just wondered if you have a problem with that?

I have to say Plymouth Barred Rocks...

Good temperments, personality, size, eggs, friendly.

My second all time favorite is English Speckled Sussex. I like the older breeds of chickens...

- Rose Comb
- I like the Barring
- They are a sitting breed
- Lay a fair amount of eggs
- not a bad meat bird
Buff Orpingtons
- I like that golden look
- they can be extremely broody
- lay a fair amount of eggs
- not a bad meat bird

I like all Dual Purpose breeds but I like the ones that if you let loose they will get their own food and in the spring they might set a clutch of eggs.

My favorites are not a purebred but a sex-link. Cinnamon Queens. RIR or NH roo over SLW hen. Sweet birds that lay and lay and lay and lay. Withstands heat and cold well, fairly quiet (well, I did have ONE loud one) and very personable....not flighty. The eggs were huge, but not many double-yolkers.

I got a batch of 25 pullet chicks, kept 6 and the rest were gone soon as I advertised them.... Yes, they're THAT good!
