I am really enjoying this thread, its nice to see what all the other crazy chicken people are doing too
. Here are my plans for the spring:
Once the Buff Chantecler and Dominique pullets start laying well we will set a group of each. We are currently working on getting a batch of Saxony duck eggs to start in the incubator. The goal is to get a group of each breed hatched by March so that with luck we will have some young birds grown out in time for the APA Nationals should we decide to go. However as it is going right now I dont think we are going to reach that goal.
There may be a few project breeding just for fun later in the season as well. Another motivation to get some early hatches is that I have volunteered my incubator for an elementary school class project.
pen 1 -WCBlue polish roo over a Splash and WCBlack hen
pen 2 -SQ Rhode Island Reds
pen 3 -easter eggers and olive eggers-WAmeraucana roo over various brown eggers including BCMarans
pen 4-W/BW Ameraucanas
pen 5-salmon and blue salmon bantam faverolles
and couple of blue project pens
I have been working on just about every color of silkie that I own. I am hatching Blue, Blue/Splash, Black/Splash, White, Black, cuckoo (although not really concentrating on that color a whole lot) and trying to hatch some buff. But the buff all seem to be in continous, nonstop, molt overdrive..
I have been very pleased with all of the babies I have hatched in the last few months. I am getting really awesome toes out of these matings.. I can't wait to see how they grow and fill out!!!
I want to raise hens of breeds I can use to hatch out sex-link chicks NEXT year. So not so much breeding, this year, as I'll have to buy chicks. But I do plan on having my bantam cochin hens hatch out some barnyard mix hens and adding some new breeds to my mix, I'm thinking some good color like GLW and SS, maybe. But mostly looking for the sex-links they year after.
working with OEGB blue salmons, fawn silver duckwings, mille fleur, mille fleur w/high white, self blues, creles, isabella and some blues... all of them from ovabid and directly from SQ breeders... i'm just gotta get a hold of steve proctor for some of his gorgeous whites... i wonder if he has blacks... i need some nice blacks too...
this year i'm gonna try to make isabella (lavender) salmons, fawn salmons, chocolates, porcelains, isabella wheatons, isabella calicos i guess...? blue columbians...
so i mostly want to work with lavenders... dun is cool, but it's more like my friend's project... and the blue salmons we have are going to be a fun project...
i am planning on hatching out some more barred rocks to sell and once my NH roo is in business (many months) i will be doing black sexlinks and more NH for more egg layers and chicks to sell.
need to finish the bator before all this
also i am on the hunt for an american game roo for my mamma and her little chick who i am 90% sure is a hen
for more games
also am drooling
over BLRWs, Lav. ameraucana's - cant decide if i want LF or bantams
and also want some FBCMs and some blue Wheaton OEGs - a few of each would be perfect
oh ya and i need a roo and maybe another few hens for barnetts my little barnevelder pullet.
by summer i hope to have a few of the above breeds and have been checking hatching eggs for sale and researching breeds like a crazy lady
so as soon as the bator is finished and holding steady i will do a test run and then be ordering some eggs!
