What are your thoughts on silkie bantams???

Wow. I didnt silkies were so loved! Im thinking of getting three buff hens from my mom. She raises buff bantam silkies and rode island reds. I REALLY want three hens though.

They are very tiny! Not as big as tinytotsSeramas is saying they are. They are no bigger than 2lbs.

how about you get my name right.. Read up on them.

Silkies are often a bantam breed, but this varies according to region, and many breed standards class them officially as large fowl. Almost all North American strains of the breed are bantam sized, but in Europe the large is the original version. However, even "large" Silkies are relatively small chickens, with standard bantam size males weighing only four pounds (1.8 kilos), and females weigh three pounds (1.36 kilos).[4] The American Standard of Perfection calls for males that are 36 ounces (1 kilo), and females that are 32 ounces (910 grams).

I have heard where people thought that they would be the size of a small game bird an were disapointed.

Sorry, I ment to say silkies. I have khakis campbells the mind.

are you referring to silky bantam chickens or ducks? I just saw sikly bantam ducks in a book last night, had no idea they existed

When I first got chickens (knowing NOTHING) I started with silkies and absolutely love the breed. They have since tolerated me adding several other breeds of chickens as well as two ducks.

They totally go with the flow, come when called and easily picked up, but they have been handled everyday from day one. Below are some pictures you might enjoy.

They have no fear from children because they were raised by several.

Silkies suck. I hate them. Wanna know why? CUZ THEY ARE TOO DANG FUNNY! You practically pee your pants every time you see them running. They have a crow that is totally hilarious! Like a chicken with larengytis(SP?). Mean little suckers too! I have a 1 pnd pullet, she's 5 months old and I swear she is the head chicken, and will take on chickens that out weigh her by 400% and you don't want to drink milk when it happens, cuz it comes out of your nose! See, I think there should be a chicken farmer comedy show centered around silkies, cuz its guaranteed to have an audience!

I have 7 of the little blighters. Its even funny when people do not realise they are chickens! The shocked looks you will get from people who have NEVER seen them. They are attention getters thats for sure. Vain little creatures...

Just kidding. I love my little walking, grumbling, beaked puff balls.

I've had different breeds of laying hens for 40 years and just got my first silkies 6 months ago. I can't believe I've missed out on this adorable, lovable breed all these years. You will not be sorry. They are so different from other chickens, so entertaining and comical.

And...I know that I have learned so much from many of you and am so thankful for everyone who is willing to share their expertise. However, I will say it is disheartening when some people post "corrections" as if we should all know it. And mistakes happen while typing..."tinytots"
