Besides resting on a pile of poop, what is the location - under a roosting perch, inside the coop near a nest box, or regular laying spot?

The shell appears it could be rather thin. Is it? If so, it may have cracked when stepped on, and a hen saw egg leaking and took advantage of a free snack.

When you present us with a mystery, it's customary to provide us with some clues.

I have some clues! This is about 12 inches from the normal spot she lays. It’s an egg from our Amber Star and she’s the only one laying now. It must have been carried to this location. We had a possum in the bird house a month ago and it was caught and disposed of. Nothing and no evidence of anything since. So I’m thinking it’s another possum or something similar.

I set up a camera and nothing showed up last
night. So we will have to wait and see. Maybe it was one of the chickens. Maybe she laid in this spot yesterday and it broke on impact. Usually she lays in the dirt about 12 inches away.
I’m keeping watch on this developing situation!

The round hole and intact shell point to a sharp beak- sometimes thin-shelled eggs crack when layed or sat on, and as someone else postulated, the hen sees a free meal.

If the picture is of the actual place that she layed the egg, I'd dissuade them from laying in a pile of poop- besides being gross, it's a breeding ground for pathogens. I

I've found midnight eggs dropped from the roost. Without more picture, I can't say that this is the case.
