I have never seen anything like this. They are tubular, about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches long, and about 3/8 inch in diameter. All sorts of critters run around here, the most common scat I see are porcupine, skunk, raccoon and coyote and occasionally deer. Assuming I can identify those correctly, what might this be?

Where are you finding these? Are there trees around. I'm wondering if they are from a bird like an owl, either poop or pellets. That's my best guess, interesting.

It's in the wide open about 30 feet from the tree line. I do have a future burn pile nearby that any large rodent could hole up in. But they can do that in the actual woods, too, not 200 feet away.

Apparently is IS porcupine poop. I was not aware that it came in different forms. Apparently the look/structure is not just dependent on what they eat, but age and gender, too.

The porcupine poop I've seen (my crawlspace has piles of it in it.... sheesh...) looks roughly like black (licorice) jelly beans. It's green when it fresh but turns very dark when it dries. They say that is likely younger (female) porcupines.

Who knew!

Hopefully you don't have any nosey dogs. I would not want porcupines, I have 5 naughty dogs.

Oh we DO have those, too. People around here are far too lax in keeping their dogs on their properties. We've only had a couple real run-ins. I'm going to talk to the worst offender's owner as soon as I see them. I don't want to have to get animal control involved, but it's getting close to that point...

I'd far rather have the porcupines than the dogs. Porcs keep to themselves, they are timid, they don't eat meat, and are mostly nocturnal. The only problem is them snacking on trees, but it's easy to protect the trees that need it :)
