What bedding should I use for the nesting area?

I changed the coop run bottom to sand a while ago, and it is going great! Here is the picture:




Now, I need to redo the upper part of my coop. Here is what it looks like above the ramp on the outside:




The inside:




I need a new material for the inside, the bedding is just not working for me! I was thinking of getting straw for up there, but I am not sure. I also have more sand, but the chickens sleep up there and I am not sure if they would like that. Oh, and I am making a top for the nest box!

Same as above. We use the finer ground premium pine shavings for the nesting boxes. We will then clean the nest boxes out in the fall and replace the shavings with either pine needles and or dried fallen leaves which we crush. That combination works well. We have a few pine trees on our property so why not make use of them!
 
Thank you all! I did end up using the pine shavings still, but I have developed some tricks to keep it cleaner and not on the run floor below!
