What bird tried to kill my chicken - video

I need reassuring. They were not able to close this wound. The doctor said the skin was too tight. I have been doing wound care as prescribed. She is indoors being kept on paper towel with food and water and a perch pole. She is getting an antibiotic, painkiller and chlorahexadine swabbed to the open wound twice daily and otherwise kept dry.

Please help. Should I bring her back?

I think it looks o.k. I don't see anything alarming and no angry tissue from what I can see.

Do you notice any bad odors?

Did the Vet instruct to keep the wound dry? If not, then I'd apply just a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment to the wound after swabbing with the Chlorhexidine.

BUT if the Vet instructed to keep it dry and just swab it, then follow their directions. Chlorhexidine is very good.

It takes time for deep wounds to granulate and heal from the inside out.

You're doing good:hugs

Oh, you're using paper towels, those are fine!! Don't get me wrong, but you may find puppy pads easier or more economical(?)

IF you want to see some progression in healing, look at the photos in this thread, but the pictures are of wounds/injuries, so be forewarned.

Hope your chicken is doing well.

We have breeding Cooper's here, which have gone after our chickens before. We also have numerous wild birds that they target. The blue jays are a good warning signal to all the birds that the hawks are on the hunt. And the hawks themselves often vocalize while they are in the air, which often give the chickens a heads up.

Our run is 100% covered. We do not allow our chickens out loose unless we are outside with them, not that this is a guarantee that they will be safe.

Well I think so. I had to leave her in the care of a friend, because my husband's father is about to die today and I'm all the way across the country in Maine saying goodbye. I've been away since Monday night. I'm leaving tomorrow at noon on my own and he is staying to help his family. She has been giving her the antibiotics and treating her wounds. I'll see her around 4pm tomorrow.

My run is also fully covered- the door was broken, this was not intentional they were not supposed to be out- the door is now replaced with a brand new door

My run door is broken and 3 birds escaped while I was away at work. This attack happened 20 minutes before I arrived. Constellation is in emergency surgery in 45 minutes.

What bird is this? Video has sound. Don't watch this if you don't want to witness and hear.

Not necessarily looking for care advice, I hope the vets know what they're doing and she's going to stay with us...

I certainly agree, this is a hawk and they will be back. Your flock in the open is now “easy pickings” for any bird of prey including owls. In addition to repairing your run door, my suggestion is to also cover the top of the run with wire, etc., if you haven’t already done so.
