What birds/small animals are cheap to raise for meat???

Make sure they carefully take care of your mom. That virus can cause cancer. I've done a lot of research on the cancer I had and Epstein-Barr virus comes up in every article. It changes B-lymphocytes into cancerous cells if the immune system is weak. I don't want to scare you, just be aware.

I wish it was that simple. She's on Medicaid because of having no money, and right now she's trying to get on disability. The problem is that EBV and FM aren't considered disabilities!!! Because of my father she also has another disease that is linked to EBV and FM. She's so skinny, and so sick. And she's constantly trying to help me and my hubby out in the process!!! She's got such a big heart, and she's put up with so much from me and my siblings, we were evil children. Well, I was, my other siblings still are. Her immune system is shot to cr*p, my dad put her through hell. I wish I could make everything better for her!!!!! Feeding my siblings is the most important thing to her, you know, taking care of her babies, so I'm trying to find inexpensive ways to do that, hopefully. I tell her about the ppl here all the time (especially Miss Prissy LOL!!!) and she always asks me questions to search the forum for. I just hope we can figure something out!! Thanks everyone, keep posting, I need all the info/advice I can get!!!

I'm so sorry she is going through such a rough time. I hope things get better for her soon.

Yes, please send it. I don't know how much of it she can do, since the Epstein Barr has effected her sleep, and she had a horrible eating disorder (thanks to my father's kind treatment) so her body can't handle much food. She lives on sunflower seeds and frozen coconut oil/butter, I'm not ever kidding. Anything that might help I'm willing to read and tell her about!!!!

I read through the link for quail, and I'm wondering what breed would be the best to raise for meat. Same for rabbits, and where do you buy rabbits???

Cjeanean,
Fibromyalgia IS considered a disability, depending on the severity and if you test positive for it. I have seen people bedbound from it and they do get disability. What is really cr*ppy is that someone has to help them fight for it. EB, on the other hand, is not as it is not considered long term, although it can take a long time for it to clear up. You may want to look into one of those disability lawyers. Yes, they take a portion of the lump sum back pay, but if it gets her disability, it's better than the situation she is in now.

She needs to eat. If you can get her to eat yogurt, there is a recipe for it somewhere in here, which is cheaper than the grocery store. Would be good for the siblings too. It is high in protein.

Another way to go about it is to call your senators and congressmen. Complain about the costs of war and that people in the US are starving.

I know it is a disability!!!! I see it every day that I'm around her!!! She's had these illnesses for almost 10 yrs, and it's not going away. Her illness are brought about by the herpes simplex virus as well as mononeucleosis, which is why it's long term. The HS virus will not let her immune system get well enough to fight back, and it's a never-ending cycle that has ravaged her body for a very long time. She is waiting for a disability hearing, she already had one and they denied her case, so she had to get a lawyer and request a hearing. She's had to wait almost two years for this hearing!!! I know that some forms of EBV can be recovered from, but what the courts fail to see is that it's not just EBV-it's three or four different things that play off each other to make things worse for her body and make recovery almost impossible. Honestly, we're begging and praying for an act of God, cause that's what it's gonna take. They want to put her on all sorts of medicine and chemicals, but what they don't understand is that because of longevity of her eating disorder and all her illnesses her body can barely handle all-natural organic remedies!!! These people don't understand, and don't want to understand, and yet they're the ones making vital decisions for the population. It doesn't help that my dad has been doing everything he can to make sure she doesn't get disability. he calls the courts and social services, and whoever else he can think of (including her doctors) to tell them that she's lying and that they should sue her for it. He's like a freakin child, and it's not fair!! She had 6 kids with him, stayed at home with all of us, homeschooled us, cooked for us, waited on him hand and foot, and he turns around, says she should have worked, too, and does all this!!! I just want to scream!!!!

I'll pm you later with some links like I promised. I also make my own homemade yogurt. It is really easy. I'll email you info about that too - you just need a starter culture and milk - and time. I ferment mine for a full 24 hours because then the yogurt culture breaks down ALL of the lactose in the milk and there is no residual lactose left in the yogurt. (I can't digest lactose)

Anyway - I will write later - just wanted to let you know. Had a crazy day but I will follow through for you.

Also - re: rabbits. Rabbits can be had almost anywhere! They do NOT need to be any breed. Mixed breed is as good as anything, really. Look at the bulletin board at the local feedmill. Look in the local classified ads. Call up a 4-H leader and see if any of their kids need to get rid of some of their excess. Rabbits are dirt cheap if found in these ways. I had both mixes and New Zealand Whites when I was a kid - any of them would have been suitalble for meat (but I had them for pets).

Consider too - not for meat - but for income - some people raise angora rabbits and sell or spin the fur. It sells for a nice price. I was looking into it for myself and will forward the links I found if you want to look it over as an idea for income.

More later via pm.

1.) Why is your dead beat dad not paying child support? This is what drives me crazy.
barnie.gif
He should be paying for your brothers & sisters not the rest of us

....welfare state is BS a little personal responsibility would go a long way. The state should be going after him. Why isn't your mom talking to Child Services they can garnish his wages.

2.) Try Craig's list & Freecycle watch for a post giving away rabbits but also post a "want" keep posting every week.

They are getting child support from him, that's why he's complaining and trying to sabatoge her. She gets a total of about $1100/month with child support and food stamps to support three kids and herself. That may seem like more than enough to the government, but then again this is coming from the same government that's okay with the food prices and taxes.

new zealand whites or californian rabbits are good meat rabbits. but they're hard to find. I couldnt find them so I went with rex rabbits. they were easy to get and at $10/ea for breeding stock it was a good deal.

rabbits yield more meat to feed ratio than any other "livestock".
