Starting around 4 weeks if you have a few chicks you will notice that some seem to start growing in nice big red combs...they all have tiny combs, but then a few chicks might start turning red...those red ones are the boys. That is what I look for. I have at least one Buff Orpington cockerel right now in my brooder, possibly 2...just waiting for the combapalooza to hit. Those birds all look like pretty barnyard mixed chickens to me. Mutts are my favorite. I like a variety. I couldn't bring myself to hatch out one breed like buff orpingtons...it's like ohh what color chicks just hatched, oh it's buff...and what color will this chick be? Ope, buff again...so on and so forth. No fun...I want 30 different eggs from hens that are 300 different colors...Lol. That is the magic. Looking out and seeing a rainbow of fowl walking around the yard.
