What Breed and Gender is this chicken? I was told americana and girl. lol

Starting around 4 weeks if you have a few chicks you will notice that some seem to start growing in nice big red combs...they all have tiny combs, but then a few chicks might start turning red...those red ones are the boys. That is what I look for. I have at least one Buff Orpington cockerel right now in my brooder, possibly 2...just waiting for the combapalooza to hit. Those birds all look like pretty barnyard mixed chickens to me. Mutts are my favorite. I like a variety. I couldn't bring myself to hatch out one breed like buff orpingtons...it's like ohh what color chicks just hatched, oh it's buff...and what color will this chick be? Ope, buff again...so on and so forth. No fun...I want 30 different eggs from hens that are 300 different colors...Lol. That is the magic. Looking out and seeing a rainbow of fowl walking around the yard.

I wanted random chickens and thats what I got lol. They were given to me so I figured they weren't some pure bred expensive chickens. They are all sweet birds and very unique. The boys will sadly have to go. I can't do the baby thing lol.

The lady you bought her own hatchery birds in different varieties, and she is just mixing them together with no breeding control whatsoever.
Just curious.... Is it looked down upon in the chicken world to just breed willy nilly? I wont be breeding. Im just trying to learn. Im more from the horse world... and that is terrible to do with horses.

It's pretty much the same with any animal. Good animal husbandry includes being judicious with breeding so that you avoid aggression, genetic deformities, losing favorable features, etc.
