What breed are these chickens (mostly roosters)?

I actually got excited bc thought this one was a junglefowl... 😂 I guess I was wrong
That’s a whole other can of worms. What’s a “real junglefowl” vs a game vs how much junglefowl do “real” game have in their background. Gamefowl people will rend their shirts and cry blasphemy against each other over such matters.

My opinion, for whatever its worth, is that many straight combed, junglefowl colored, gamefowl were developed more directly from junglefowl once or several times a long time ago and then had junglefowl hybrids bred back into them more recently in history at times when Europeans had contact with SE Asia and access to junglefowl hybrids. Thus the reason we call the straight combed, junglefowl-looking, gamefowl “bankivoid” gamefowl. It used to be believed that the Javan red red junglefowl, gallus gallus bankiva, was the forefather of such gamefowl.

So no that rooster wouldn’t be a red junglefowl. But it is a gamefowl that retains the red junglefowl look, and may have had junglefowl in his background at some point in the past.

Here’s one of my gamefowl/junglefowl hybrids for comparison.

What happened with Oliver? Are you looking into buying these birds? Where would you keep them?

He's still pancaking on my bed (changed pic). I'm not looking to buy birds, but I've been visiting rescues (hence the pictures) that may be able to give him a better home. We're still very undecided. In terms of flying, the vet has cleared us for travel :) we have our appointment on the 29th to get the health certificate :yesss:

Many of the feral chickens in Hawaii look very much like your beautiful boy above. They are descended from jungle fowl, game fowl and random stray and abandoned chickens. 😊

I absolutely loved staying in Hawaii. It is astounding how many different breeds of chickens just roam around freely. My album is just full of pictures of random chickens in parking lots, at the park, on the beach, etc. And the people are so unbelievably nice too! I really wish I could live here. I was thinking the other day, maybe some day we can come live in Hawaii and own a chicken rescue or something haha. Then I looked at the housing prices and quickly snapped back to reality 🥲 but seriously, it's amazing what you guys have here and I will miss Hawaii a lot.

Yes it is expensive here. You are on Kauai, right? I always thought it was funny to see chickens on the beach! Hurricane Iniki hit there almost 30 years ago, allowing many chickens to get loose from their coops. Also Kauai has the most feral chickens, as they do not have any mongoose there to keep the population down. I heard a few were spotted recently, but for the most part they are not as much of a problem as they are on the other islands, especially the Big Island.
I sincerely hope you can keep Oliver. I have read your story and you have done so much for this bird.🥰
I am happy you were able to spend so much time in Hawaii and your experiences have been good ones. Best of luck with Oliver!❤️
