You can check their pelvic bones. If the gap is narrow she is not laying. If you can get 2 or more fingers between her pelvic bones, she is laying.

Okay, it took me a LONG time to get these pictures up, but here are the best I could get. It's so hard to get them to stay still for long.

I guess these are pea combs? I hadn't really gotten a close look until recently, and I think I'm still not clear on what pea combs are. I thought the bumps would be bigger. Anyway, I hope these are clear enough!

Yes, those do look like pea combs. So I think there is a good chance that your birds are either Buckeyes or Buckeye mixes.

Ok, I also asked the feed store about where they get their chickens, and it looks like the hatchery they usually order from carries Buckeyes. Must have been a mix-up or part of the assortment.
