what breed do I get???

I want some girls that wont croak in our central texas heat, are gentle and fun for my son who is three and just all around great birds. Any suggestions? How muchdo chickens usually cost? Eggs or older chicks.. whuch is better?

I hav a buff orphington who is the sweetest girl ever but there personalitys differ but they do do well in heat they are one of my favorite breeds

Older chicks are definetely better for the heat and young hands no dought

When we started out with 5 back yard birds I got a few different breeds just to see which I liked best and were good with my boys who were 3 and 4 at the time. We all loved our Dominique the most but they all have their own personalities. I can tell you what I have found that we will not try again are Black Australorps or Production Reds. The production reds are great for egg production but not pets and the Australorps are pretty but not friendly at all, very skittish. Of our current flock I really like our Delaware and Buff Orphingtons.
