What breed do you have that is still laying in this cold weather?

My one splash plymouth rock hen I hatched out from Halo's eggs has only missed ONE day since she started laying--in spite of our unseasonably cold weather here (for us, lows in teens w/single digit wind chill & highs only hovering around 40 for almost a week, altho it is warming up now). My Welsummers have been very consistent and my Blue Andalusians too. My Ameracaunas are finishing moulting & I haven't seen an egg out of them in 2 months. My EE is laying again after her moult. And my olive egger (1/2 Ameracauna, 1/2 cochin) just started laying & is laying everyday.

My golden comets and cochins have been reliable layers right through the last week or so of single digits to negative nighttime temps. I just have to keep up with gathering the eggs more often than usual so they don't freeze and crack.

It has been quite cold in Utah.

My two RSL's lay almost every day.

My Black Minorca lays maybe three times a week?

My two EE's lay every third day or so. One of them just started laying about five days ago. Today I got my second egg from her!

All my girls are 34 weeks today.

My cochins quit. My buttercups quit. 1 of my RIR quit. My Jersey Giant quit.

My two white leghorns and my younger RIR are still chugging along, 2 WL eggs a day and a RIR egg every day or two. Of the above quitters, the buttercups, rir and jersey giant are molting. My cochins are growing some new feathers, but not sure if molting or just 'roo recovery' after I got rid of the pain in the flock......

It has been below freezing a couple weeks straight (although not today, yay!) and I have still been getting my White Leghorn and RIR eggs. I have added no extra light or heat, all birds are on 16% layer with scratch in the morning and scraps whenever, free range in my 1/2 acre yard and locked in secure coop at night.

I was getting Blue Andalusian eggs up until I sold them a couple weeks ago.

Of my standard size birds, my Chantecler, Rosecomb Rhode Island Reds, and Delawares have continued laying all winter.

Of my bantams, my Silkies are the only girls still laying.

The temps have been bitter here this winter. The daytime temps have been in the 20s for quite some time, and dropping into the single digits at night with wind chills below 0. We are having a momentary heat wave today and tomorrow (mid 30s).

Even through all the snow, wind, and freezing...my girls have continued laying. I'm very impressed with the breeds I've chosen.

ETA: I provide no heat source for my birds. Except for 4 windows on the south side, my coop is entirely enclosed (20x30 block building), so I do turn on 2 60W light bulbs during the day so they do have some semblance of daytime. The lights are turned on around 7am (daylight) and turned off at 5pm (dusk).

I live in the NW and temps have lately been between mid-30's to mid-50's or 60's I guess... I am bad at keeping track of the high temps - just the really low ones. Anyway, I have buff orpingtons, EE's, gold sex-links, black australorps, a welsummer, a speckled sussex, annnddd... I think that's it. They are all laying, just not every day. Of 23 hens I typically get near a dozen a day now, and on days were I get near one and a half dozen the following day I typically get slightly less than a dozen. Every once in a while I will get a day where I only get 6 or 7. But so far I am pleased with how my girls are doing for the winter.

I've put large, double-paned south-facing windows in one of my coops and it makes a big difference on how much light the chickens get and helps the temps stay up better. Nothing like passive solar!

I have 5 pullets born in March of 2009, two EEs, two RIRs, and one buff brahma. I also have give 2+ year old COlumbian Rocks.

I get between 5-9 eggs a day, but 9 is rare and I get pretty darn excited at that lol. We have yet to get 10. I think I may lose my mind when that occurs lol.

I open the coop door in the am around 8-11 (whenever i roll out of bed to be honest) and then when it gets dark around 4:30 I close it and put the light on til 9-10pm.

I'm pretty impressed seeing as half my girls are nearly 3 years old (possibly older, no way to know)

Standard cochin and std cochin x wyandotte are still laying almost every day. It's gotten down as low as 9 degrees, if you don't count the wind chill which has gotten in the negative digits.
