This girl belongs to a friend of mine. She's about 5 months old, lays light brown eggs and is GINORMOUS! She was sold to her as a chick that was listed as a white plymouth rock at a tractor supply. She has to weigh over 10 lbs. Now, I have a white plymouth rock as well, and other than being white doesn't resemble this one at all...so, I'm just curious what all of you think! WPR or something else? thanks!

She's a Cornish cross. It's surprising she's in that good condition considering that Cornish cross typically suffer major health issues at a very early age due to their abnormal growth rate. It's uncommon that they live long enough to lay eggs.

Ok. That's kinda what I thought too, but I'm new enough to owning chickens that I just wasn't certain. I'm sure she's survived this long because she free ranges. But, man she is huge! I'm not sure what my friend will do with her. She's very attached...what do you think the odds are she'll survive?

I agree she's a Cornish cross, and she looks great for her age.

What exactly do you mean by "survive"? She's already much older than most CX make it to. She may live to a year, or 18 months, who knows? Sounds like your friend has a good management plan for her and as long as she's getting around well and laying she's good. I'd just let your friend know to keep an eye out for signs of distress--purple comb, listless, not laying, not moving, not eating, etc....those are signs she's shutting down and not things she's going to come back from. If she has those things, she should be put down. but until then, enjoy her!

I guess I meant odds for her continued survival :) I don't know how long a Cornish x has the potential to live...not something most people strive for with that particular bird!
But, she's super sweet, and I think it helps she has two roosters and the rest of her flock to keep up with!

If you continue to free range her and restrict her commercial feed intake, she may live several more months. I would be very surprised if she lives much beyond a year, but who knows?

I think our 2 of them were listed at tractor supply were listed as a Cornish... and we got two white plymouth chicks as well, one is rooster and one a hen, the hen is so tiny nest to our two cornish, everyone keeps telling me then need to be harvested, but i just can't now.. I get the biggest kick out of them.

this was a ameraucana pullet from a general hatchery so I know she's not pure.I'm thinking red shoulder Yokohama cross but I have no idea where the white earlobes are from? Any insight? She does look like a roo but 22 weeks old and no crowing.she's about ready to lay.She has the Yokohama shoulders and comb but the earlobes confuse me.

First off, I'm sorry but that bird is never going to lay eggs. That's a cockerel. He'll crow eventually.

The red color on the shoulders isn't from Yokohama blood, it's simply a characteristic of Easter egger males. It's commonly referred to as red leakage.

The white-ish earlobes may mean the hatchery brought in some Leghorn blood to boost egg production recently in this bird's ancestry.
