We have ISA Warrens (the typical english battery hen). I don't know if you have an american equivalent but my 6 girls are still giving me 4 eggs a day even though their water has been frozen it has been so cold.
Here is a pic to see if you recognise the breed.

I've heard that people think Leghorns are really mean, but mine isn't! Course she's skiddish, but all of the hens are at first for me. They calm down once I start handling them though. And right now we have a bunch of snow, but that doesn't stop her!
We have a lot of snow too. I have a Red Star and she started laying in September and she has only missed 2 or 3 days of laying! So I am going to get another one in the spring. :)
Our Ancona we've had since she was 2 days old and she is still really skittish. :(

Just to let everyone know, I'm getting an EE, a Deleware, a Red Star, and a Welsummer, but still wanted to see what other people that was better. :)

I think it is what we would call a Red Star or such. :)

warrens have no white feathers and lay lovely brown eggs that you would find in a supermarket.
they run a close race with my welsummer, who lays one every other day. sometimes one every day

We have the ISA, they are called ISA Browns here. Sex linked commercial brown egg layers. Make great back yard birds but like a Red Star, Rhode Island Red or Production Red can be overly aggressive to newly introduced hens or just far too dominant to be with other breeds. I really like my Production Reds, they are super human friendly, low maintenance and great producers of large eggs but when integrating new birds it can be a challenge.

welsummers are the best because they are friendly, they look nice are good for showing they are easy to look after and lay between 4 to 6 eggs and are happy to be around other hens

March is getting closer!

So I ended up getting, a Red Sex-link, a Black Sex-link, a Welsummer, a Deleware, a EE, and a Buff Orpington. I blame it on CHICKEN MATH! I can't forget the pics. I'm hoping all girls. :)

Here are the more recent pics.

Here was when I first got them.
