Hi All, I've had 3 hens for a little over a year now and love them! I just got a new chick from my feed store (a predator got my sweet but incredibly broody Buff Orpington :((((( ) and they said it was a Cuckoo Maren hen but now that I have it home and have been watching it for several days I really don't think so! For one thing it acts like a rooster! All proud, stretched out and puffed up. I've hardly even see it sit down LOL! But the feed store says they sexed with 99% accuracy. I can't have a roo where I live so I sure hope it's somehow a very proud hen. Look at the black legs! That's why it doesn't seem like a Cuckoo Maran. Is it a Black Sex-Link? It does have a solid black head, which would mean hen, but does that look like a hen to anybody? It is the happiest chick imaginable, it just contentedly trills almost constantly, and is so inquisitive and friendly - I sure hope it's a hen!!! What breed do you think it is?

Are the bottoms of its feet pink/whte? Black Australorps are pretty popular, another would be Black Jersey Giant if feet are yellowish besides the black sex link. It is really stout looking for a young chick, would be prepared to have a cockerel there.

X2 on that being a cockerel

Ugh, I know, h/she is SO cockeralish! I won't be able to keep him! Here are the bottoms of the feet, mainly the same as the legs, blackish with a tiny bit of yellow - no pink at all. On the other hand, when I hold him/her up and let the feet dangle they just hang limp, which is a pullet trait - so there is some hope!
