Like I said, I'm very new to chickens. Is this an Ameraucana? He's quite large if that makes a difference. Much larger than my Buff Orpingtons, but all the chickens are around 3 & 1/2 months old. He has learned how to crow in the last few weeks and doing his "job". lol

He is handsome, isn't he? I just love this guy and I'm dying to know what he is. He acts like a perfect roo. Crows several times in the morning and then is usually quiet, does an awesome mating dance (hysterical!) and lets his girls eat first while he watches over them. As for people, he just casually walks away from you when you get close.

There are no Ameraucana roosters with that coloring, so I would guess he's an Easter Egger. If he has a pea comb (hard to see from the pic) then he is probably carrying the gene for blue/green eggs.

Sad.. they should, its a cool color

Yes. The folks that breed Ameraucans are quite protective of the work they've done with their breed. The confusing thing is that the hatcheries were selling "Ameraucanas" before the breeders set the standards, and they took the name, which the hatcheries still use.

Can cause a lot of misunderstanding. Look at http://www.ameraucana.org/ to see the 8 colors that are allowed in the breed. Great pics of male, female, chicks and bantams.

Personally, I love the variety of the EEs. Tomorrow I am picking up a wheaten Ameraucana pullet and another that is a cross between 2 pure Ameraucanas (buff x wheaten), that the breeder carefully identified as an EE.

She looks buff with some partridge showing, but because of known breeding, I am assured of blue eggs.
