Hello! I have a cross breed here. My Buff Orpington hen decided to hatch some eggs recently and this is my only pullet. I know 100% the father is a Rhode Island Red. But I don't who is the mother? I have Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Easter Eggs, Gold Laced Wyandotte, Buff Orpingtons, Buff Brahma, Black Sex Link, and Red Sex Link.

I know the Easter Eggs lay green eggs and there actually was one chick hatched from a green egg. I have 3 chicks, one died a few days after hatching. I'm not sure who is who. I assume my cockerel chick is the buff Orpington/RIR mix because he's just a golden red color.

Most likely you've got Production Reds rather than proper, mahogany red Rhode Islands. That chick is not an Orpington cross. The white skin of the Orpington is dominant, and that chick has yellow skin, not white.

Yes, I didn't think she was the true mother to this chick. I also don't think it's a pure RIR either.

It's definitely not a pure Rhode Island Red because of the "mealy" markings on the feathers. Its mother probably wasn't a Plymouth Rock, Orpington, or Wyandotte because of the skin color, and definitely not an Easter eager. I would guess he is half red sex link.

Are you sure? Those are fairly common wing markings for a Rhode Island Red. Also, the chick would have the correct skin color for a Plymouth Rock or Wyandotte. Barred Plymouth Rock would be a black sex link, and Wyandotte would give a rose comb.

Yes, you are right. The wing markings could depend on the parent stock, although it is an undesirable trait. It could be pure Rhode Island Red if the parents were not bred to the standard.

What pattern do you feel the wing feathers should have at that age? What part is undesirable? Do you raise Rhode Island Reds?
