I got this sweet little guy from tractor supply out of the bantam bin, I was there when they got the shipment and waited an hour to get them because they have a policy to let them settle in. I picked this guy because he was the only one that was black and white and I thought he was adorable, and the woman working told me he was a bantam brahma. Also I named him Poe, which is the only reason I'm calling him a "he." Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone has any opinions, but mostly I'm curious what he will look like. Any ideas?

I also got 6 chicks labeled "southern wranglers" which I've never heard of before and couldn't find on the internet. They're supposed to lay dark brown eggs, and they all have feathered legs. Half are all black and half are chipmunk colored/patterned, and they all have black beaks and skin. Does anyone know what a southern wrangler is or what it will look like? I think they get their chicks from Hoover's hatchery but I couldn't find it on their website either. Also they have five toes. Super weird. The employee said she'd never seen them before.

I've been doing research and I see nothing about a regular sized breed with black skin and five toes that lays dark brown eggs. Also they seem to be much fluffier than Poe. Here are a few pics of one of the brown ones:

You can't see it too well, but it has a big red stripe down its back.

So do you think it was mislabeled? I don't see how that mix could lay dark brown eggs.
I know this doesn't help you bc those chicks were obviously mislabeled. I've never heard of a "southern Wrangler" but I've heard of "rustic ranger" which is a marans mix that should lay dark(ish) brown eggs.
Sorry you were given the wrong chicks.
Lol I too got some mislabeled chicks this spring.

That is so annoying! I already have two silkies and they don't lay any eggs, which is its own mystery, and I was hoping to add dark brown egg layers to my flock :( Any idea what the first chick is? Was the employee right about it being a brahma?

I'm sorry about your luck. 🙁 The first chick is a mottled Cochin. Farm stores often know next to nothing about identifying chicks and get them all mixed up. Your best sure fire way to get dark egg layers would be to find a private seller who knows what they have.

That's probably what I'll do next time. Was just hoping to avoid shipping costs from online. Thanks for identifying my other chick! I just looked it up, he looks exactly like the pictures of mottled cochin chicks. And the breed is very pretty, so I'm excited about that. I just have one more question now that everything else has been answered, I also got a little grey bantam from them who is really tiny, much smaller than the others, any idea what it is?
