Hi there,
First time posting, and first time owning chickens. We recently acquired 4 chicks at 1 day old from a local chicken farm, and I was sold a gold top chick. However, as she is growing, I don't think she is and I'm also concerned she is a he. Is there anyone who would be able to help out? They are 4 weeks old now.
Thanks
Hayley

Welcome to BYC. I won't try to guess the breed, but it sure looks like a cockerel.

Welcome! I agree with sourland. What color legs? It will be interesting to watch growth over the next weeks and months.
Ask at the seller's! I've never heard of 'gold tops', so I have no idea. It look like some of the Easter Eggers that I have, and most of them have green legs.

Thank you both for replying. I have to say I'll be devastated if its male, as we won't be able to keep it and he/she is my favourite. Such a beautiful bird and so friendly. Im in the UK so a gold top could possibly be something else in the US? Ill post a picture

That's a very beautiful hen! Your chick is shades of gray, not orange/ gold. It's hard to believe that it will transform into a bird this color, of either sex.
Hope it's a pullet!

A gold top is a sex link, a gold silkie roo over a light Sussex hen. They're great clockers. If it is a gold top white roos and gold hens.

Yes the same one. I had a really bad gut feeling she was a he. Rather disappointing as I paid extra for that specific breed and sexed as a pullet. Thank you so much for replying. Clockwise from top right they should be cream legbar, welslummer, blacktail and gold top but like I said, its the first time I've ever bought chickens before and just found the most reputable breeder and trusted them.

Sexing chicks is tricky! The best at it will fail sometimes, no matter what's the method. Too bad if you can't keep him.
