Thanks for your help. This chicken was given to us to look after by my son who is training to be a vet. It was brought into the vet clinic by someone who found it between two unit blocks.
I know nothing about chickens but trying to find out. Any idea how old it would be? And how long until you find out if it is a rooster or a hen?
If we keep it we were thinking we might have to get a companion for it. Would it be ok to get another chick and to put them together soon?
It's cute, but I have no idea what it is! You should definitely get it another chick as soon as you can. They do best with other chicks for company, but in the meantime you can put a stuffed animal and/or a mirror in with it to keep it company.
Looks like a cross to me between an australorp and americauna.....maybe full americauna. Looks to be @ 2 weeks old. Curious to see what it turns out to be. Good luck!
Here is our baby chick at now about 5 weeks old. Any ideas on what it is? We are also wondering when we will be able to tell if it is a hen or a rooster. It is a bit hard to see in the photos - but it has a small grey comb (similar in colour to its feet). The feathering is mostly in except for the head which seems to be starting to come in now. It has one or two stray feathers on its feet. Thanks.
Looks to be pullet to me and the gold is beautiful. A freebie chick given to me last year was said to be black giant/ red sexlink (rhode island red roo over delaware hen) mix. She has a few feathers on both legs too. Your chick looks more "compact" than ours did but here is a pick that yours reminded me of.
This is also one of the chicks supposedly from the same hatch but it was deformed. It had a lot more gold so slightly more like yours- I'd look at golden spangled breeds. I do hope ya'll get interested in keeping chickens. They are so easy and fun to care for
