Ive had this duckling for 3.5 weeks now (was alone on a busy road). At first I thought Pekin because there are some that roam nearby, but she seems to be developing dark feathers here and there. She has also grown extremely fast like a pekin. She was only about 2 inches tall 3 weeks ago. Anyone have a clue? I'd like to get her a friend of the same breed.

I'm far from an expert (I raise a few ducks, but they're smaller breeds and Swedes) but the upright stance in your first picture makes me suspect some sort of Indian runner or cross of the same. Or a Buff Orp. They're bred from runners. Does he stand upright a lot? Or was he just posing?

Anyway, I wouldn't be as concerned about breed of companion as about age and gender. He's a cutie.

I was thinking the same thing about it possibly being a fawn and white runner for the same reason, but the legs appeared to me to be too far forward and thought it was probably just the stance and looking tall, like little khakis do....I have khakis and rouens. @Amiga , @BantyChooks , @WVduckchick one of them should know for sure.

My two newest were a Pekin and some maybe Cayuga cross. Around same age so they grew up together as besties. Put them in with my mature Pekin female and after some fussing everyone is inseparable now. I agree that its more the age than the breed. The stance and face looks like my Pekins...maybe a Muscovy pekin cross? Heres her progression. First pic as a purchased hatchling, then 10 days later and 10 more days and then five weeks later. Forgive the mess in the yard. Ignoring the grass to deal with the pen. I am by no means an expert on ducks....weve rescued them for a long time but usually adults or mallard ducklings. Then they are released or rehomed. These are my first intentional purchase keepers. phone dump may 2017 5274.JPG phone dump may 2017 5481.JPG phone dump may 2017 5583.JPG IMG_6554.JPG

It was just standing up having a look, as it still doesnt like me much. She doesnt stand up like that often.

Im not actually sure if the ducks a few houses up the road are actually pekins, but they are large, heavy and white (not runners or muscovies). Chances are that this baby is one of theirs.

Some updated photos from today. Her head is starting to turn white.

I cant really see much runner in her, is it possible for pekins to have black feathers?
