What type of feed do you use? I’m looking at switching from layer feed to all flock. So sorry, I haven't lost any yet, some are 5 yrs old. I feed my whole flock the All Flock type of feed though, not feed for Layers. I provide calcium in a separate feeder if some feel the need to peck at it. I don't know if that makes a difference but as I have many roosters mixed in, I heard the Layer feeds can harm them, so everyone gets All Flock here. I still get plenty of eggs but some don't lay every single day & that's OK with me. Maybe I just got lucky with mine so far? I didn't know they may die young.![]()
Good feed sources are limited where I am & I want fresh feed, so Tractor Supply has pretty good product flow, no feed bags sitting around getting buggy or moldy. They seem to stock layer feed in abundance so there are times I may need to call ahead, find which Tractor Supply has All Flock in stock, or let them know ahead of time to set aside 4 or 8 bags. I buy in 4s at a time because that's how many I can fit into 1 tin. I also supplement the pellet feed, Supply scratch grain at times, but in a separate feeder. When I mixed scratch with pellets, a couple of brats used their beaks to shovel out pellets onto the coop floor, in order to eat the scratch. What type of feed do you use? I love them all!!Mine would definetly be the Sebright.
I have one named Stormy who is the funniest little thing ever, and she hatched two beautiful babies, the sisters Silver (silver laced) and Penny Joy (gold laced).
PS. Note that Silver and PJ are both half OEGB.
This is Stormy,

I had a BLRW they are pretty! They are a true red, and not just golden.I have a black laced red Wyandotte named Nugget who is my favorite! She’s super friendly and smart! Savvy around the others in the flock and a real personality! She cracks me up all the time with her antics.
If you’re looking for a quirky bird that is very entertaining, I love Ameraucana’s too! Super intelligent bird. They love to perch too!
I am careful of getting high production egg layers, because I would like the chicken to have a great long life. I heard that Sapphire Gems can even have layer problems. I had one and it only lasted a couple years.I do not, personally, recommend getting ISAs, Comets, or any other red sexlink hybrid if your intention is to keep them as pets. They tend to have a very short lifespan due to their super high egg production causing problems down the line.I've not had a similar experience to what you describe because I stopped getting them years ago after I realized that almost every one of them died at 2-3 years of age from something related to egg laying, particularly internal laying and cancers of the reproductive tract, and those that made it past that age still generally died from those as well later on. It was just too heartbreaking for me to grow attached to a bird and then watch them go through that. I hope you have better luck than I did with yours as they age.
Your hen's warm off white color reminds me of french vanilla ice cream. She is adorableOooh, can you please post a photo of yours? I think one of my mystery rescue hens may be a Buff Brahma mix.
She is so sweet, she's also a wonderful surrogate mama or "auntie" the other hens' chicks. Just love Chanel so much!
