What breed lays the darkest brown eggs?

Marans or Penedesencas are generally considered to be the two breeds *capable* of laying the darkest eggs -- but that doesn't mean that all Marans or all Penes DO lay extremely dark eggs. In fact, many Welsummers lay eggs as dark as many Marans.

not MY cuckoo marans... they lay dark brown but NOT that super dark pretty chocolate!!!!
after a few month,, the eggs i am getting are a bit darker then when they first started to lay but still not as dark as some...


you can see the 3 maran eggs right???

We have a welsummer who used to lay almost white eggs and suddenly juts switched to deep terra cotta...
