. My experience with RIR was not very pleasant, but I am only one person and have heard many good reports on them. Good luck.

I've raised both breeds over the years and there are pros and cons to each of them. For sheer egg numbers, RIRs will typically outlay BRs. I've had some of my RIRs lay close to 300 eggs in a year, whereas I've never had a BR get close to that. Having said that, I personally prefer BRs as mine have been friendlier than my RIRs (I've had quite a few aggressive RIRs), my BRs have been slightly hardier than my RIRs, and my BRs have tended to lay slightly larger eggs than my RIRs. I would definitely not trim their beaks as it is a cruel practice that can create serious health issues in your chickens. There are a couple of articles on de-beaking at http://forcechange.com/11726/beak-trimming-of-chickens-is-cruel-and-must-be-stopped/ and http://www.upc-online.org/winter07/debeaking.html that I would suggest you read before trimming their beaks. Whichever breed you decide to get, good luck with your birds.

Yeah I'm not a fan of trimmed beaks. But as far as breeds I've had both. And I've had RIRs and BR that I have loved and some that I have hated lol. The think I like about my BR is that the seem to be a better winter layer. But the RIR tend to lay more eggs overall. Like suggested earlier you could get one of each.
