So my new flock just arrived, 12 RIRs and 8 Brown Leghorns. When I ordered them, the hatchery included a surprise hatchling that they described as "exotic" or "rare"...but they said there was no way to guarantee what breed it would be. Since my chick identification skills are quite rough (I only figured out which of mine were leghorns because there were fewer and they weren't red like the others!), I thought I'd include a couple of pictures to see if anyone can identify it:

Some light skimming on some websites turned up all sorts of possibilities, but the truth is I'm stumped.

Could be a red, blue laced Wyandotte. I purchased one at 24 hours old with that color pattern. Looks similar to a Buff Orpington chick but has a little grey/blue area on the back towards the butt. Mine is light like yours. They told me it's most likely a girl! Good luck...

Thanks, I can't wait to see what it turns into. It's a lively one, my grandfather saw it when they arrived and named it Lucille, although we suspect it will turn out to be a rooster, it has quite a set of lungs!

New pictures!

Still haven't found anything that looks like her...but then again I'm not very good at ID'ing most chickens either.

The Wyandotte varieties seem to be favored thus far...whatever she is, she loves to eat! She's one of the largest chicks in my flock, it's really something to watch her dig a trench around the feeders getting every last dropped scrap while all the other chicks just sort of timidly peck at the feed. As others have said here in the forums, watching chickens is more entertaining than sitting in front of the TV or computer, and probably more mentally healthy too!

Looking at the Wikipedia article on Wyandottes, I found a picture of a blue laced red that looks identical to mine, only full-grown. I'd say we have a positive ID here.

So what do I win? Just kidding...just amazed that I'm starting to recognize breeds. She's beautiful...but I'm starting to wonder if she's a little boy! ;-( Not much of a tail! All of my girls started to get a little bustle tail about 2-3 weeks. I paid for all girls and ended up with 3 Roos...none of whom had tails! Good luck.
