What breed of chicken is best for egg laying?

There are many breeds that are prolific layers - all with different characteristics that might make them a better or worse fit for you. I see your location is listed s Pennsylvania, is that correct? For that climate you'll want a breed that is cold hardy, so avoiding some of the larger single combs would be a good idea as they tend to be susceptible to frost bite, especially if the coop is not well ventilated in the winter months. Are you interested in brown, white or blue/green eggs? Do you think you might like or dislike feathers on the legs? What about crests - (essentially funny hair do's of feathers) - do you think you would rather have or not have those one your birds? Are there particular color or patterns that you have seen on chickens that you think you might like or like to avoid?
