What breed of chicken is this, and what gender?

Here's a BCM rooster at 3 months old. Looks very similar to yours, except he has tail feathers.

I hate to say this, but I seriously hope that another chicken picked out those boys tail feathers because to suggest that a seller might remove a rooster's beautiful tail just to pass him off as pullet is unthinkable and cruel

Thanks to all who replied to my question. After further investigation, we have confirmed that they are both Black Copper Marans and both roosters!

Black Copper Marans. Both are males, you'll be getting no eggs from these two. They look young, 6-7 months maybe. It makes me wonder if somebody deliberately plucked out their tail feathers to try to make them look more like hens.

I think the farm/feed store got tricked. They didn't know what breed they were and told us newbies they were hens! They will take them back, however. Sadly we need to have non-crowing hens. We really like these guys; they have a ton of personality! We've learned a lot in a short time.

I had 3 of them, but I decided to give 2 away to a new home. They had the sweetest personalities, too. Glad to know the store will take them back. If you replace them, be sure and quarantine the newbies if you can.
