Help! We are trying to get our chickens registered for our kids to show at fair. This one is 11 weeks old. Our black orpington hatched eggs we got from a hatchery. They were supposed to be either cochins, white plymouth rocks, or heritage rhode island reds (that is what I ordered). To me, this chicken doesn't look like any of those breeds. I don't think it looks like any of the breeds that the hatchery carries (see list below). I contacted the hatchery asking if I could email a picture for them to identify, but they wouldn't get back with me. Anyone have an idea on what breed this chicken is? Is it a mix? In the attached pictures, one shows the chicken in question with a white rock - same age. Another pic shows it with our really old rhode island red hen.

List of hatchery chickens: plymouth rocks - all colors, black-tailed buff and black marans, easter eggers, orpingtons, heritage rhode island reds - rose and single comb, buckeyes, black sexlink, buff minorca, welsummer, wyandotte, and production rhode Island reds

A side note... when I went to pick up the eggs, the gal at the hatchery said that her two-year old might have mixed up the eggs with other eggs. Most of the eggs I got were not fertile - When I candled them at day 22, they had nothing in them (... a little frustrating being that I paid for a dozen). But, at least 3 hatched!

I think you are right! I just looked at a bunch of photos of both breeds you mentioned - the New Hampshire Red looks just like my chicken. Thanks!
