hi all I am going to get 3 or four chicks and 2 or three will be silkies but I don't know what the second breed should be. The colouring needs to be blue or grey so my blue Easter egger will have a buddy and I'm looking for a good layer and a friendly personality. Any suggestions? I would also like to know if I should get two or three silkies

This silkies will not be intended as egg layers and if I get two or three I think it will be fine

I have silkies with my EE's and they do fine I only own silkies and EE but they all get along so you might just consider a couple EE so that you don't have one chicken that's different from the rest. Note- all chickens are different and some are mean my biggest chicken isn't the meanest one I own and the smallest isn't the nicest so be careful when mixing breeds together that are considerably different sizes.

Most of the hatcheries require a minimum order of 25 or so. You would need to buy from a hatchery to get vent sexed chicks. That will get you around 95% accuracy in guessing the sex. Silkies often need to be 8 months old before you can tell what they are, outside of being vent sexed at a day old, when start crowing or start laying. If you buy two or three that haven't been vent sexed, you have a good chance of coming up with some roosters, that you will have named hen names for months before they start crowing. So allow for that.

I have five other chickens other than my ee so I'm wondering if three silkies would balance the breeds out a little
