What breed of duckling is this?

I just went and checked on my duckling (I purchased at the feed store-hatchery choice) My cute one doesn't' have stripes. He/she has a big black spot on top of the head and black spots just below the eye towards the back of the eye. It also has black splotches on the top of his webbed feet. A mix? He/She is very big compared to my black duckling (cayuga?) that I got at the same time. I hope it is a rouen. I'm surrounded by duck clubs/hunters.

Ok...I just went and checked on Bungie and JJ. While I was at work, I swear Bungie doubled in size and is almost as big as JJ now. JJ is a week older and a pure bred khaki. So I am seriously thinking Bungie is a Rouen. Otherwise there would be no way Bungie could ever catch up in size.

Did you hatch that one out? or was it from a feedstore/hatchery?

Just curious.

A friend has Rouens and she got a 100% hatch rate, gave me four. 3 were drakes

Bummer on three being boys.

I have call duck eggs in the hatcher and I need girls badly. I lost all of my girls except one, and some of the eggs are from one of the girls I lost. I had one of her babies hatch last week - but I think it's a boy. One other almost made it, but it died after zip and being half out

I'm pretty sure it was a girl judging from feet and bill colors.

I also have 7 goose eggs in the bator, and I hope they hatch and that I get at last two girls and a boy. The rest can't stay anyway, so I don't mind what they are

as long as they live and are healthy, I wont have a problem finding homes for them.

I have noticed on the "one stripe / two stripe" rule that a lot of the rouens don't have two complete stripes - but when they do you can be sure. Sometimes it'll show up better when they're wet, too.

If it is a definate two stripe, though, you can be sure it's a rouen, and if a definate stripe (and a dot), you can be sure it's a Mallard - the fuzziness of some of their markings make it harder to tell right off.

I wonder if the more ambiguous markings have anything to do with male or female? hmmm... something to study on....
