So two years ago when i was in 8th grade i rescued this rooster. I thought it was a phoenix of some kind (someone dropped it off in a neighbor hood and called me to get it) can anyone identify it?

It's a Red SL/Wyandotte Mix. Someone misunderstood how the SL hybrid works, and tried to use a SL roo over a Wyandotte, most likely.

Edit: This cross intrigued me, so I plugged a Red SL roo crossed with a silver laced Wyandotte hen into the Chicken calculator, and voila:

25% Pullets, fawn/dun patterned silver incomplete laced
25% Pullets, black patterned silver incomplete laced
25% Cockerels, fawn/dun patterned silver incomplete laced
25% Cockerels, black patterned silver incomplete laced

Sounds close enough for government work :p

Good point! The Rosecomb is dominant. Though I've seen some seriously sloppy comb management with hatchery Wyandottes (I think they cross their stock with straight comb breeds like leghorns for egg productivity). It's kind of a 'all bets are off' when you talk hatcheries :p

BUT, mine is just a theory, I'd love to see other speculations. Genetics are awesome.

Pele, wouldn't the Wyandotte comb be dominant in such a cross?

Thanks for the answer - never thought about the 'hatchery' aspect and use of single combed birds in their breeding programs. Color pattern is right on.

wow i was way off with the whole phoenix theory. . . haha thank you guys so much!
