I want to get a cockerel this spring in the hopes of producing my own sex-links when he matures. These are the breeds I currently have for hens:
Buff Orpington
RIR/Buff Orp cross
Silverlaced Wyandotte
Easter Egger
Faverolle
Blue Silkie
What breed of cockerel should I get? Some requirments: must be winter hardy (the smaller the comb the better) and can toterate being contained if nessesary![]()
Rhode Island male x Salmon Faverolle would be the cross I would do. The silver laced wyandottee would work but the Salmon Faverolle would work best. With the RIR and faverolle, the down will be clear of any markings. With a RIR and wyandotte cross there will be markings on the back making the ID more difficult.
The faverolle needs to be the salmon variety not white.
Clint,
The salmon faverolle are silver wheaten.
