What breed?

What a nice group of people! I suspected that chicken lovers would be good folks. Here's my story:

I'm a pediatric anesthesiologist who lives in Cardiff By The Sea, California (right above San Diego.) I am a newly-single mom of two wonderful girls who are 6 and 8 years old. When I was in high school in Mesa, Arizona, I was in the Future Farmers of America and competed on the teams. In 1980 I was second place in the state in poultry judging (we had excellent teachers, and our team had a 1, 2, 3 sweep.) We then went to Nationals and took 4th (Arkansas ALWAYS took first back then.) Despite this, I've never owned any chickens and I don't know much about the various breeds (in the FFA poultry competition, we focused on White Leghorns and broiler breeders only, and just learned the USDA standards for those types.) Now that this chicken has shown up in our lives I think that I will continue to keep chickens; they are so fun and entertaining and lovely. Apparently chickens are legal to keep in most of the SD county area, so no problem there. I'm so thrilled to be a part of your community, and thank you for the warm welcome!

FYI, my bird is in fact a pullet, almost ready to lay, and a mixed breed -- bantam buff brahma and serama, supposedly. I managed to find her owner and returned her to him. We are sorry to see her go, but plan to get more chickens in the near future. Thanks for all of your comments.
