When in reality, there is no such thing as the color Lavender, The Standard calls it Self Blue.

The best breed to raise is the one you like the best, period. I raise docile breeds because, while some of the higher strung chickens are just gorgeous, they don't mesh with my personality.

My personal favorite is black silkies. I also love the wyandotte temperment. Choose a breed you enjoy and buy the best stock you can afford, and show to learn more about your breed and compare your stock to others.

I always go back to the Buff Orpingtons (Bantams and Large Fowl). Docile, good layers, friendly. Ultimately, it is your personal preference. One of my 4H families has the following: Modern Game Bantams, OE Game Bantams, Blue Orpington Bantams, Barred Rock Bantams, Silkies, Salmon Favorales Bantams and a Barred Rock and EE LF hens. Every member in the family may like something different.

Yep, but the vast majority of people don't know the standard colors, only the hobby names. Label anything as Lavender, and I betcha it'll sell like crazy.

Actually, Lavender is really popular in Indian Runner Ducks right now too - in ducks, Lavender is an actual color (it's Chocolate + homozygous Blue).

You know what else is popular right now? Mille Fleur Bantam Cochins - I've seen some pretty ridiculous prices for the really good ones! And Coronation Sussex...good luck finding those for less than a small fortune! Although, the craze over those seems to be dying down a little now...

I agree the best thing to do is fine the breeds you really like and breed that. Honestly, I learn a long time ago do not go on the "fad breeds" the ones that are selling well right now. By the time you fine some some nice birds, get a nice stock put together, and are ready to start selling them their will be a new it breed. The best thing to do is do your research fine a breed that is best for you, and one you really like and enjoy.

This may be off topic, but if you are looking for ideas for a new flock- I recommend Dutch bantams! I searched forever for hatching eggs and was finally able to locate some this spring from a fellow byc'r. I can't rave enough about them. They are the sweetest birds I have encountered yet. They are definetly a breed worth preserving. They are tiny little things and lay tiny little eggs (so far, for me anyway) but they are absolutely delightful little birds and don't take up a lot of coop space. The blue variety is especially hard to find- or has been for me, anyway. It would be great to find a breed that may not necessarily be a "fad", but is rare, and worth preserving that meets your needs, whatever they may be.

It's always best to raise what you love and if you don't know try a few breeds out. I was surprised by what I ended up liking and as each month goes by I learn what good choices and bad choices I have made. Have fun with whatever breed(s) you choose breeding poultry isn't an overnight thing and get the best stock you can find because with poultry cheap doesn't save you money quality does. Buy a standard of perfection first before you start buying seed stock and hang out on this board and ask questions there is never a dumb question....
