What breeds for starter flock

Wyandotte’s aren’t a docile nor bird friendly breed.I did everything i could to turn my silver laced into a calm bird and nothing worked, and I had this bird as a chick and put in extra time to friendly this bird. She also ended up being a bit aggressive with the other birds, this is typical however for Wyandotte’s.
I have had multiple Wyandotte’s and they were friendly and tame. Maybe you just got a bad bird.

Chicken aggressiveness is often a bird to bird situation in most breeds. However there are some breeds that are generally more aggressive. Wyandotte’s have been good to me.

It might be a good idea to start with the “wallet friendly” breeds. One mistake in your coop design could end your flock. EEs are inexpensive and can be found almost anywhere. EE’s would also be good because you never know for sure what color eggs you’ll get. And, if tragedy strikes you won’t be out a lot of money.

If your building your coop it might be a good idea to post your design and progress so if there are any issues others can help out before it is complete.

I agree with the post above, if your wallet is okay with some mortality in your rare breeds i would say go for it. However, be aware that even if you make zero mistakes this first round something will likely take out a few of your birds. A fact of the chicken culture that is often learned the hard way (and it still sucks no matter how long youve been raising them).

I just realized how negative my last post sounded, my apologies! On the positive side, congratulations on your new found hobby!!! Chickens are pretty amazing and even the regular ol hatchery birds will provide endless hours of enjoyment and eggs.

I agree with the prior posts. One thing I would add is, if you have a fair or poultry show, go check it out and you can meet and talk to the breeders of many different breeds and see the birds up close. Often times the breeders take birds to sell. Good luck and have fun...
