What breeds of dogs do well with chickens?

When my daughter moved to a place where she couldn't have pets, she left her female Walker Hound with us. She was great with the chickens for the most part she just ignored them.

I have two Papillons and they love my chickens, actually they are a little frightened from thema nd stay a safe proximity away. Basically, a good dog with chickens is any dog SMALLER than them!

It's up to the owner for sure on making them a good chicken dog. Keona my G. Pyrenees would carry off 2 week old broiler chicks that would be free ranging on pasture and eat them live. I had a hell of a time breaking her of that. I kept thinking of the myth my grandpa kept telling me, if she taste chicken she will always kill them.

Well I couldn't give up as I spent a good amount of money on her to PROTECT my chickens not eat them. So I finally broke her of not eating them but instead she would pick them up in the field and carry them to the garrage where she slept at night. I would go into the garrage and she would be laying there with about 15 chickens next to her. I guess if she couldn't eat them she would try to be their mother???

After about a month of that she finally, and I mean a long finally she became a very good dog for what the breed is suppose to do. She barks at everything and doesn't touch the chickens at all. But it took me that whole first year to train her the chickens are what pays for your dog food so leave them alone!

My advice is go in with the mentality that your going to expect the worse and train her from day one that the chickens are not toys..... or treats.

An australian shepherd puppy that you can raise with the chickens. Triple points if you can see that the parent's of the puppy are fine with chickens/ducks/small animals.

There is no 100% safe breed. Avoid hunting and terrier breeds though. Genetics are important (if the parents are fine with small animals, most likely its offspring will be too) , along with up-bringing (the reason to get a puppy).
