What do you want in your birds besides good egg layers? Do you have a cold/temperate/hot climate?

Any sex link breed would be a good choice (golden comet, golden buff, red star, ISA brown, and novagen are a few common names). They lay a lot of eggs and have a friendly temperament. I'm not sure if they fly or not, but a wing clip will make sure they can't.

Rhode Island reds are good layers. I have one and she has no interest in flying over the fence. She is also one of my friendliest chickens.

Wyandottes might also be a good choice. Mine are kind of lazy compared to other breeds and don't like to fly over the fence. They lay a good amount of eggs.

Welsummers are a great breed. When mine were young, they did want to fly, but when they started laying, they settled down. They lay a good amount of speckled brown eggs. Mine are very friendly and like to follow me around.

Brahmas and cochins will stay in their pen, but only lay an average amount of eggs.

In my expierence, most of the larger chicken breeds don't like to fly. If you are really worried about them flying out of their pen, you can clip their wings. I did that to my legbar flock, and they can't get over the fence anymore, but they can still fly to their roost. I hope this post helped! Good luck with your new chickens!

Don’t get Polish floofy birds. They’re nuts.

Sapphire Gems (blue Plymouth rocks) have been cranky and bossy

Dominant Coppers (Czech breed copper maran over bar rock) have been rock solid. Calm, friendly. Don’t even know if they know what wings are.

SLW girls seem offish, and like to sneak attack the young chicks

Easter Eggers I had were just plain dumb. They had to have been kicked in the head as chicks.

Red sexlink was a machine. But not predator wise. Hawk had 1.5 free meals from her.

That’s about all I have experience with. My next flock will be bar rocks And/or heritage RIR
