What can be used for the prevention of Cocci?

Is there anything else besides medicated starter feed that I can use as a preventative for Cocci?

I have several keets in the incubator. I will move them tonight or tomorrow, probably tomorrow to the brooder.. Hopefully I can get this question answered before then.. Search gave me a bunch of different answers.. Everything from medicated feed was necessary to it is not necessary.. lol

I purchased Purina Game Bird Starter because it was 30% protein. It turns out it isn't medicated. The feed store carried Medicated Turkey Starter but it is only 22% protein. I thought I read somewhere that Guineas needed a Starter Feed with a minimum of 28% protein...

So is there anything that I can add to the water instead?

When I purchased my keets last year they where started on Medicated Chick Starter.. The protein was too low. Because of that several of the adults now have crooked feet. They get along ok & seem happy but I am trying to make sure these babies have the correct amount of protein..

After all they are my babies..

Unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother in it added to their water; 1-2 TBS per gallon of water (don't use a metal water fount), and you can add a crushed clove of garlic to the water as well if you'd like to go the natural route. Adding Amprolium medication (usually Corrid) to their water for prevention is risky, IMO, you never know if they are getting too much medication. Having it on hand in case they come down with an overload isn't a bad idea tho.

And yes, the keets need the higher protein. Lots of people raise keets on unmedicated feed.. and they do fine. Yours may do fine as well. I prefer to raise my keets on medicated feed tho because I hatch/raise/sell a LOT of keets each season and prefer to have peace of mind that they are not leaving my ranch with a cocci overload.

Also, not all medicated feeds are created equal (or contain the same medication)... starter feeds medicated Amprolium are what you want to use for keets, so be sure to read your labels if you go shopping around for a different high protein starter feed that is medicated.

Thanks Peeps..

The wife is picking up the ACV as I am typing this.. I decided to go that route so they can have the higher protein food.

How long should I give them the ACV water?

Thanks again for your help..

Phil..

P.S. Had to Google what Mother was in Apple Cider Vinegar... lol

I keep all of my birds on unpasteurized ACV w/Mother from day one... it's good for them at any age. It has vitamins and minerals in it and helps boost their health and immune system in a lot of ways, plus it contains probiotics/active enzymes.

Unpasteurized ACV w/Mother is kind of expensive, but there are inexpensive ways to make your own... keep googling, lol.
