Hi all.
Hubby built a wonderful 5x8 home for our 5 ducklings and 5 chicks. He used some old flooring as the base and, after 2 days of spot cleaning, it's time to clean that baby properly! My instinct is to take a mop and bucket of pinesol/water to it but wasn't sure if that was safe? I have been searching on here and it seems dawn is safe but I'd like to use the pinesol if possible-dunno why, just partial to it.

Can anyone advise?

I wouldn't use pinesol. It has a strong odor (I like it too) and chooks, particularly chicks are very vulnerable to that kind of thing. I use diluted bleach or my favorite, clorox clean-up spray. That kills all the little germies and no odor after it dries out all the way.

I don't use any cleaners that may leave a harmful odor for my chicks. I use Oxine. I order it online through a Poultry supply. Great disinfectant and safe for babies. I spray down my water containers between watering, use in nest boxes and feeders or anywhere I need to clean that the birds like to go.

All I can tell you is all birds have a sensitive respiratory system. Thus they were used as canaries in coalmines. A couple years ago I had to respond as a firefighter with airtank on etc for a house with a lot of dead birds. They didn't know if it was carbon monoxide or what so they ran outside and called us. In the end it was the same cleaner they've used for years and that days the open windows were not enough fresh air or something. Any cleaner near any bird can burn their lungs. Be careful. Only a few larger birds lived that day.

The floor itself shouldnt be getting that dirty before it's time to get the birds out of the brooder.

There should be enough bedding to keep most of the mess off the actual floor.

The best cleaner would be soap and water followed by a 10% chlorine solution, and let it air dry beforeputting the birds back in.

jennifer7----bleach and soap ???? Don't you mix it when you wash your cloths? Never use bleach with ammonia..it produces toxic gas. I use oxine for the germs, permithin 10 for the bugs. Sioux City, Iowa
