With that many chicks, I think you're going to have to clean/change the brooder daily. IMO anyway....

I did daily, sometimes 2x daily with only 16 chicks.

Yep, daily (sometimes more than once!) cleaning is probably going to be your best bet for that many chicks, but the DE would help too. Where did all that banjo music come from?
