What can I do to make this a good baby chick brooder-type area (besides cleaning it up)?

It also has a plus of one long wide shelf 33in deep and 7ft 2in long. Here are the other measurements= 16in above the floor and the opening is 33in high.

My father is willing to make the doors with hardware cloth [not chicken wire?] --he has so many wood-working tools his big garage can barely contain them besides that he and my mother mostly built their own house here in AZ.

The chickens are my mother's love/project/hobby, not my father's. So he is willing to do a little bit of work and spend a little bit of money, but balks at much work and much money. He is in his 80s after all.

I love all of your ideas and will incorporate them all into the design including the hole up to the top near the window. The problem will be getting him to buy the _Sweeter Heater_ . when we already have one of those red heat lamp bulbs and a few other clip on lamps.

By the way what kind of bedding substrate? I have been using the compressed sawdust pellets for all of my past baby chicks. Is that good ? I'm not sure that wood shavings are in good supply around here [small town] --or the cost compared to the pellets. I plant to put a wood railing on the bottom near the opening to keep the substrate from blocking the doors or falling out much. You guys are a well of kindness and knowledge, thank you! --Julia
