Just beginning to dabble in poultry. I have 3 buff orp hens(each laid an egg a day all winter and the lightest is 7 lbs, so I'm liking this breed so far) and a barred rock rooster, and our first clutch from this cross should hatch this week. does anyone have any experience with this kind of cross?

I have some that are sexlinked colored from the same breeds crossed and I think it's a WONDERFUL cross!! I love them!
(To get the sexlinked coloring, the rooster has to be the BO, and the hens have to be Barred, so yours will be the same breeding just different colors.)

thanks for that. what about the other traits? weight, eggs, growth rate and what not... any Idea which way they will lean?

the Orpingtons are big, so I find this cross to be pretty large birds. They are generally tame and gentle. They started laying in the normal age zone, I think 22-24 weeks of age. They lay eggs that lean towards the Barred Rock shade of brown, and they do lay pretty good. It took them over a month to get really "reliable" as layers, but I'm happy with them.
I feed Flock Raiser to them their whole life, which is 20% protein and generally considered good for "heavy" and dual purpose breeds.

I love the looks of these crosses. I only wish I had a BR rooster and a BO. Gonna try to get some BO in June.
